Table shuffleboard,
fun game of skill
What is shuffleboard?
Back in the 1500s, people from all ages and social classes played a popular game of skill in England: Shove Ha’Penny. Like its name suggests, this game consisted of shoving five pennies (or halfpennies) along a small board. The aim of the game was to land coins between lines, called beds, and to score more points than your opponent. A few decades later, table shuffleboard was invented.
Shuffleboard became very popular among soldiers, workers and even aristocrats. But King Henry VIII wasn’t happy with the excessive drinking and gambling habits involved with this game. He banned shuffleboard tables from English taverns; only aristocrats were allowed to play this addictive game. The ban didn’t last long: shuffleboard tables were back in public houses in the 1600s.
The English game was then exported to the US around 1692. In 1848, a judge determined that shuffleboard was a game of skill and not a game of chance: the addictive game could be played at bars without gambling licences. The game became very popular among American soldiers and Hollywood social elites, who had their own shuffleboard table at home. Then, its popularity started to wane during the 70s for about 10 years. Since, table shuffleboard is played around the world, like at Shuffled, our social gaming bars in Paris 19 and Grenoble..
Shuffleboard is a mix between curling, pétanque and bowling and can be played by 2–8 persons. The first team to score 15 points wins.

Shuffleboard rules
1 – Split into two teams: 1 to 4 players per team.
2 – Decide which team goes first: heads or tails, rock paper scissors, who paid the last round, etc.
3 – Slide your pucks along the board while applying the right amount of pressure but don’t fall off the board! Aim for the scoring zones (numbered from 1 to 4) or knock your opponent’s pucks off the board.
4 – The first team to score 15 points wins!
